Ivette Cruz (1963-2017)

Ivette Cruz, 53, of Beacon, died June 16, 2017, at Kaplan Family Hospice in Newburgh.

Born in Manhattan on Aug. 31, 1963, she was the daughter of Jose Antonio and Haydee (Nunez) Rios. She married Ismael Cruz, who survives at home.

Other survivors include her mother, Haydee Nunez Rios of Beacon; seven children: Julio Cruz, Luis Cruz, Raymond Cruz, Yesenia Cruz and Ivelisse Cruz, all of Beacon, Jose Cruz of Poughkeepsie and Ismael Cruz Jr. of Fishkill; a brother, Tony Rios of Beacon; two sisters, Haydee Rios of Beacon and Milagros Mahmood of Wappingers Falls; and 12 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 20 at Fairview Cemetery in Beacon. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Vincent D’Aprile

Vincent D’Aprile (1926-2017)

Vincent Anthony D’Aprile, 91, of Kingston and formerly of Beacon, died on June 15, 2017, at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, with his family at his side.

Born in Beacon on Jan. 17, 1926, he was the last surviving of nine children of Cesidio and Marianinna (Di Camillo) D’Aprile, immigrants from Raiano, Italy.

Vincent attended St. John the Evangelist School in Beacon and graduated from Beacon High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy in 1947 and did course work for his masters at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served during World War II in the U.S. Naval Corps. He was a great lover of opera, classical and jazz music.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Marie Heppell; his children: Camille D’Aprile of Kingston; Marguerite Quigley (Sam) of Essex, Connecticut; Vincent D’Aprile Jr. of Kingston; Joseph D’Aprile (Debra) of Woodstock; Gina Riberi (David) of Los Angeles; and Pier D’Aprile (Stephanie) of Millis, Massachusetts;  eight grandchildren: Matthew Smith of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; Allegra Smith of Manhattan; Gianna and Margaux D’Aprile of Millis, Massachusetts; Marcel, Adrien and Cambria D’Aprile of Woodstock; and Marielle Riberi of Los Angeles; and a sister, Mary D’Aprile of Beacon.

The family will receive friends on June 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Keyser Funeral Home, 326 Albany Ave., in Kingston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on June 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 242 Main St., Kingston. Ruth Schaetzl (1923-2017)

Ruth Irene Schaetzl, 93, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and formerly of Fishkill, died at Myrtle Beach Manor on June 15, 2017, four hours shy of 94th birthday.

Born June 16, 1923 in Astoria, Queens, she was the daughter of Edward and Anna Bauer. She was educated in Astoria and Manhattan Schools. On April 3, 1948, she married Joseph Schaetzl, who died in 2003.

Ruth is survived by her children: Jo Ann Schaetzl of Elk Grove, California and Robert Schaetzl (Rosalie) of Conway, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Carrie Ann Benyuska (Brian) of Sacramento, California and James Schaetzl of New Windsor, New York; and two great grandchildren: Kylie Ann and Abby Jo Benyuska of Sacramento.

Ruth was employed in Manhattan by the New York Telephone Company until her marriage, when Ruth and Joe moved to Dutchess County. When her children were of school age, she returned to work parttime at The Card Shop in Beacon and then as a receptionist at Southern Dutchess Eye Care in Fishkill and at Batt Florist in Beacon.

She was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Beacon and St. Mary’s Mother of the Church in Fishkill.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 21 at Engel Funeral Home, 5319 Route 9W, in Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on June 22 at St. Mary’s Mother of the Church in Fishkill, with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital (stjude.org).

Sybilla Thompson

Sybilla Thompson (1935-2017)

Sybilla Thompson, 81, of Beacon, died June 11, 2017, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

Born Sept. 5, 1935, in Port Chester, she was the daughter of Nathaniel and Jane (Banister) Carter. She married Thomas Thompson Sr., who died before her.

Sybilla was a retired operator for AT&T, and a retired dispatcher for Joan’s Taxi in Beacon. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church and was baptized in 1993.

Her survivors include three daughters: Leatrice Huggins of Beacon, Rebecca Brown (James H. Brown III) of Beacon and Priscilla Thompson of Beacon; two brothers, Issichar Yacab of Beacon and Beverly Carter of Ohio; two sisters, Jane Winchester of Port Chester and Susie Freeman of Wappingers Falls; and her grandchildren Yvonne, Shontalea, Shakera, Jeffrey Jr., Cassandra, Israel, Frank Jr., Destiny, Angela, Mark, Dominique and Wesly, as well as several great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held June 15 at Springfield Baptist Church, followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery. Box 687, Beacon, NY 12508.
